Formed in 2004 by teenager John McCauley, Deer Tick has evolved and grown a following. Over the years the band acquired new members to be what it is today. Their first album including all current members was War Elephant in 2007. The original member, John McCauley, grew up in Providence Rhode Island and is the brain behind the lyrical composition of the group. McCauley began his musical career by teaching himself the drums, guitar, piano, and pedal steel. In high school, he began touring local areas and writing his own songs to perform. After graduating, he began piecing together a band including playing duets with drummer Dennis Ryan, and later joined by others. Deer Tick has now been compared to bands including Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, and Uncle Tupelo. In 2013, the band branched away from rugged composition to fit the indie category. After a 4 year break between 2013 and 2017, Deer Tick returned to the stage and released two simultaneous albums. Their most listened to tracks include Baltimore Blues, Twenty Miles, Ashamed, and Goodybye. Their monthly listeners average around 300 thousand each month on Spotify categorizing the band as still fairly unknown.
